Oh, Ubisoft, how much nostalgia, sadness, and delight is associated with this organization. I remember how I just sat down and started going through the first part of this franchise. Tears well up from how long ago it was. In those distant times, this game captured the hearts of many thousands of players. Then came the great trilogy about a boy from Italy. And then the series began to decline, not counting the four . But today I want to tell you my impressions about Origins . Well, let’s begin our immersion into this world of great disappointments.
Expectations
Still fresh in my memory, how the first trailers and first gameplay videos showed. Yes, then everyone thought that the series would progress thanks to new mechanics and a new style of storytelling. Based on the presentations, there was a feeling that the game would combine the best aspects of the Witcher with the dark souls combat system. But as a result, they took the investigation system from the Witcher and worsened it, and from dark souls they took dodges and two types of attacks (heavy and light).
Plot
The plot component in this game, in my opinion, is the weakest among all the games in this series. History is not filled with any great meaning, we do not need to defeat some tyrant, participate in some kind of conflict, everything is much simpler – banal revenge. At the time of passing, I understood almost nothing. We play for the last of the order Medjaev. Unknown people kidnapped us and forced us to take them to the Crypt, as a result of our mistake, our son is killed by our own hand, then it all comes down to revenge. Our hero’s wife will appear in the plot, and you know, for me it was the strangest display of relationships. We are shown how our heroes are always far from each other, they are brought closer together in one cutscene, they spent the night and ran away further. I understand that both are overcome with grief and a thirst for revenge, but when they showed their “breakup” there was not even a feeling of empathy.
I don’t think such relationships are typical for Ubisoft, just remember Black Flag. where it was interesting to watch the development of Edward and Mary Read
The saddest thing is that during the entire plot I remember almost nothing, neither the names of our enemies, nor why exactly we kill them. Even the characters who are determined to help us are so bland and uninteresting that apart from Cleopatra, which was remembered at most as simply preoccupied, no one remained in the memory (and in comparison, remember Da Vinci from the Ezio trilogy or Blackbeard from the four, they were remarkable). Of the battles, I can highlight the fight with the snake, but how I came to it, and what kind of snake I have no idea.
The plot does not show interesting events. One could focus on how Cleopatra interacted with Caesar, or show some other more interesting period in the history of this country. For example, when I went through the Ezio trilogy, I was so interested in the reign of Rodrigo Borgia that I read about him and watched the series of the same name. And if we take the pirate part, then there is such an atmosphere that you immediately want to watch some kind of pirate film (the same pirates of the Caribbean or the series Black Sails). What will you want to watch or read after playing Origins?? There was only one moment that evoked warm memories – the chariot races (I immediately remembered the movie Asterix and Obelix at the Olympic Games). Games about assassins have always covered some important historical events. for example, troika or unity talked about the American and French revolutions. I understand that some part of the events was modified, but nevertheless, interest in studying this material developed.
I would also like to note that there is no clearly defined cool antagonist in the plot. Remember how good the same Borgia was, or Haytham Kenway from the pirate saga. I always thought that a colorful villain was a special feature of Ubisoft. In Far Cry, from 3 to 6, and in Assassins, it has always been interesting to watch how the Templars demonstrate prudence, wisdom, cunning, and deceit. But it turns out that such an interesting figure has not yet been born in Egypt.
Gameplay
This component has changed compared to previous parts. The first thing I want to highlight is the change eagle vision. Now we literally have an eagle, with which we mark enemies and points of interest. Apparently, the developer thought that getting information directly from a bird would have less magical abilities than simply highlighting all enemies in a certain radius, but the decision is controversial (it is also controversial that the bird will have to be used always, in all quests, because. they do not show a specific point, only an area, but our feathered companion will tell you the goal). The next trick is leveling enemies (yes, the levels of the opponents appeared in the syndicate, but there it was done more competently in my opinion), which makes us understand that an enemy ahead of us by 2 lvl is already a huge problem for us, and if this is a battle with a mercenary, then the feeling of a fight with a boss will not leave (remember The Witcher 3, there if an enemy is ten lvl older than you, you can kill him, but it will take a long time, but it is possible). It is also worth noting the skill system, it has become more similar to modern RPG games.
Pros and cons
The elephant fights are very good
To tame an animal, it must be put to sleep with a special dart
The game gives you complete freedom to choose weapons, the main thing is to have time to grind to level up
And now to the cons. Let’s start with the fact that the vaunted huge map is mostly empty, there is a huge region with just sands, on the edge of which there is a lone point of interest. By the way, the points of interest boil down to the fact that you need to fight with enemies. This is either a camp where you have to fight, or a treasure where you have to fight again, or a fortress where you also have to fight. Of course, there are extremely rare points at which you need to solve the constellation puzzle. The next disadvantage is the system leveling, as I already wrote, the difference even at 2 lvl is already significant, which means the game in such a simple way forces you to go through all the boring additional quests (the problems of the local residents are as simple as possible, it’s not interesting to follow the dialogues). This leads to the following minus. Elite hunters who will try to kill us. Most often we will be much weaker than them, so in addition to farming all the quests we will also have to run away from the superpower of these hunters. The next disadvantage appeared due to the abundance of armor and weapons – grind, we will always have to look for resources if we want to test a new type of weapon and still deal normal damage. True, our developer friends figured out how to simplify this. The final minus is donation. If you don’t want to grind or farm, then buy an accelerated experience gain and a set with resources for real money in the “time saving” section. Also donation store contains a very strange appearance for the roach – unicorn. Although, it would seem, Egypt with its myths could give much more interesting styles.
Meeting such guys is a special test
Here you will find a set of skins for crafting and ability points
Half of the skills are garbage, some of which help to gain experience for various kills of enemies
The pyramids are beautiful, no complaints
Conclusion
In fact, the game could have been good and interesting, but for some reason the Ubisoft bosses decided to set the goal of making money from donations, rather than attracting attention to a good game. Boring quests, half of the unnecessary skills, a dull plot and the imposition of completing most of the side effects in order to keep up with the level – this is a very wrong way. The whole game I was waiting for something interesting, but I never got the slightest pleasure from it, I even took the reference to the murder of Caesar negatively, although this is probably the only thing closest to the past assassins. The series from this part left only the name from the Assassins, although the idea of showing how it all began was interesting, but the implementation of this idea turned out to be, as they say in football, “A swing costs a ruble, but a blow costs a penny.”. Ubisoft often chooses the path of “inspiration” from more successful titles, but implements them in their masterpieces rather clumsily. Well, at the moment the part about the assassin-mage has already been released (otherwise I don’t know how to characterize a person’s ability to select several targets and be behind his back at once and kill without the possibility of getting resistance), and then a very tolerant Japanese samurai. We are waiting for the assassins to rise again.

In general, it’s an interesting idea, considering that there are glitches from the heat in the game (and there is even an achievement for some, such as locust rain). It would be possible to make some mini stories, like what they did in Valhalla with dots with blue circles on the map. Maybe fights with some glitched monsters or something like that. In any case, there is no point in making huge areas of the map in which there are no points of interest at all (and there are some there). You get the feeling that they managed to cut down a huge map, but there’s no more content to fill it with.

Hello, it’s the same in the “great” trilogy. The only difference is that in one case, if memory serves, we take revenge either for the whole family, or for the father who was executed before our eyes, and in the case of Bayek, for his son. In fact, here, just like in Fallout, the script seems to pluck the strings of our soul, because for some, due to age or other reasons, a father is more valuable, say, for others, a son.
One gamer is ready to be a son who takes revenge for his family, another will be able to associate himself with a father who is ready to do anything for his son. It’s good that there’s no turn there. Father Ezio has a secret, but there is nothing that can be called the wrong side, that is, something that you can directly rebel against. Even more so with Bayek’s son. The boy died and that’s it, but evil remains evil to the end.

There seems to be a message there that revenge divided them. The whole game is about this. Since they took revenge and opposed not one person, but a group, and due to the gameplay of the game they acted alone, they separated and… They became too different. As I understand it, firstly, the purely feelings of the spouses disappeared and dissolved in the heat of the struggle, and secondly, the wife became even more of a predator, and Bayek is still softer. They have become incompatible. That’s all.
That’s exactly why I didn’t want fucking Rome, or rather, not the era of Roman colonization, but Ancient Egypt, specifically the struggle for power under the heretic pharaoh Akhenaten. And I’ll remind you., that Akhenaten went against the priests of polytheism. If we now have an Orthodox Patriarch who is not at all a poor old man, then there was already gold and silver… What is not the basis for the emergence of the order? Noooo.

It’s the other way around, it’s logical. Because, forgive me, they say, once upon a time the climate in Egypt and that part of Africa was different. Perhaps during the so-called Old Kingdom, but then everything was exactly like that.
How will you fill the desert?? Glitches from the heat? There are oases there anyway. Lots of tombs to loot? There is such an opportunity, but let me remind you that we are essentially playing as an ancient special agent, the head of the Supreme Leader’s security service. In addition, Bayek is shown to us as cardboard honest and noble. And suddenly rob tombs?
for some reason, the Ubisoft bosses decided to set the goal of making money from donations, and not of attracting attention to a good game.
For some reason? And it’s not at all clear why?
Thanks for the blog!
Regarding the plot, I probably agree with you. It’s rather sparse and melodramatically illogical in places. The only thing I remember is how the assassins emblem appeared 🙂 I wonder if they originally intended it that way or during the development of this particular part?!
I have a feeling that in the Gameplay section, you also have some disadvantages 🙂 Maybe it’s worth describing it here somehow neutrally? And lower the comparative part into Pros and Cons?
Hardly in advance, otherwise this part would not have come out so late)

Initially I planned to describe it in minuses, t.To. for me there are a lot of them, but I didn’t want to load the section, so the gameplay also contains disadvantages 😀

I don’t argue, Ezio took revenge for his brothers and father, who were hanged before his eyes, but at the same time he uncovered a conspiracy against Giovanni (father) and fought with the Borgia family, who wanted to take possession of the apple for their own selfish purposes. But Bayek is just taking revenge.
As I understand it, firstly, the purely feelings of the spouses disappeared and dissolved in the heat of the struggle, and secondly, the wife became even more of a predator, and Bayek is still softer. They have become incompatible. That’s all.
At the end of their relationship, it seemed to me that it became more important for her to always be involved in affairs under the leadership of Cleopatra, and Bayek wanted to create a society that would fight against everything unfair. Well, in general, for me these relationships were meager, any in the previous parts were more interesting. Subjective opinion, not imposing)

Not familiar with this period in Egyptian history, but sounds interesting.

It was meant that there is no point in being proud of an empty map, just like in the odyssey, about half is not filled with anything.
To be honest, one of the first associations with the desert is oases and glitches, but there is very little of this there
I always believed that single titles would bring in more money if they lured players into an interesting game, rather than spending money on buying the skins of various animals)
But no, it’s the same thing, the only question is the form, the content, the faces that either arouse interest or not =\

There are a lot of interesting things there, because over the years, Akhenaten’s motives are not clear. Historically, he was the first or one of the first to try to introduce monotheism, the idea of one God. Was he a man of ideas, a prophet of his time, or a man for whom monotheism was a tool, when in his head he was rather a revolutionary, eager to break the power of greedy priests? Or was he even a madman with a transcendental sense of self, who saw himself as the greatest light, above all else, since he temporarily crushed polytheism?
It was meant that there is no point in being proud of an empty map, just like in the odyssey, about half is not filled with anything.
Since it is logical in relation to history and geography, I would say that the whole issue goes into design, so that it is beautiful, since the desert also has its beauty.

You are not a businessman, dear) You need it? Works for the sake of the plebeians? Give them something enticing and attractive and immediately poke them into the mazain of all sorts of things so that… Grandma, grandma, bitch, grandma! Otherwise, these plebeians are not needed.
But no, it’s the same thing, the only question is the form, the content, the faces that either arouse interest or not =\
Of course, but I think you will agree that the trilogy has more memorable characters. And those with whom Bayek dealt are boring and unremarkable, I don’t insist on this, my subjectivity)

I completely agree, if we take the geographical aspect, it is exactly respected. I would like that in those empty parts of the map there are at least some opponents, even banal scorpions that will drive away those who like to walk on the sands.
